The family at leisure

GSQ Blog Posted on September 13, 2016 by Pauline WilliamsNovember 8, 2024

Do you know someone who has been caught up in the Pokemon Go craze? or maybe someone who spends a lot of time on Facebook or Instagram or other form of social media? I’m not a fan of social media or computer games, but my daughter recently introduced me to a couple of games to play on my phone while I’m on the train or waiting for something else. I even helped her to catch a few Pokemon, while she … Continue reading

From family history research to a family history

GSQ Blog Posted on August 8, 2016 by Pauline WilliamsNovember 8, 2024

What colour is your elephant? A family history is like an elephant – huge and impossible to digest in one piece. One way of reducing the writing task to a manageable level is to consider it a compilation of smaller parts or chapters rather than as a whole. The truth may be out there – we all look for it in different ways

GSQ Blog Posted on June 13, 2016 by Pauline WilliamsNovember 8, 2024

Geoff Doherty’s guest post at the end of May coincided very neatly with my recent research on a person totally unrelated to my family. Like Geoff, this is not the first time I have become quite wrapped up in someone else’s family history and, hopefully, learnt something new along the way.   I belong to a small genealogy group called Genie Hunters. We meet monthly and the group’s aim has been to provide a forum to share our successful, and … Continue reading

Reviewing progress so far and maybe catching up

GSQ Blog Posted on May 9, 2016 by Pauline WilliamsNovember 8, 2024

I went to England in July last year to catch up with my mother and brother both prior to and after the Unlock the Past Baltic cruise. Have you visited family or a repository, perhaps attended a conference or just a half-day or full-day course, made lots of notes and reminders of things to follow up afterwards and then find that ‘life’ makes this follow-up seemingly impossible. It feels somewhat selfish to focus on ‘following up’ when there are a … Continue reading
