The following article first appeared in Generation, Vol 3, No 2 in December 1980, by EN Jacke, Cranbrook, North Queensland. The grave of FRANCIS JOHN EARL is the oldest marked existing grave in North Queensland, north of Bowen. The grave together with two others is thankfully well hidden at the base of the ranges, west of Townsville, and thus has escaped the attentions of the weekend marksman and the yahoo trail bike rider! Francis John Earl’s death was the seventh … Continue reading

The Wreck of the Undine 1900: is your German ancestor here?

GSQ Blog Posted on April 23, 2018 by guestbloggerApril 23, 2018

by Stephanie Ryan State Library of Queensland stephanie.ryan@slq.qld.gov.au The story of this particular shipwreck was given some exciting names in the newspapers: Romance of the sea, That strange story of the sea, A tale of the sea: a mystery explained. What happened and why should we be interested? The Undine, a German barque, built in 1867, owned by Messrs. Half a century later, searches in the Trove newspaper archive confirmed that H J Suddaby had indeed been a jockey. His name appeared … Continue reading

Bridging the Past and the Future – Congress 2018 – another perspective

GSQ Blog Posted on April 9, 2018 by Pauline WilliamsApril 9, 2018

I was one of over 600 delegates at the 15th Australasian Congress on Genealogy and Heraldry, held at the International Convention Centre in Sydney from 9 -12 March. The theme for the Congress was Bridging the Past and the Future. Since my return, I’ve been reading quite a few posts by other bloggers recounting what they gained from attending the Congress, including Shauna Hicks’ post on this blog. As we each take something different from any event we attend, I … Continue reading

Bridging the Past & Future Congress, Sydney March 2018

GSQ Blog Posted on April 2, 2018 by Shauna HicksApril 2, 2018

Congress was held at the International Convention Centre, Darling Harbour in Sydney over four days from 9 March to 12 March 2018. There were over 600 attendees plus exhibitors and it was wonderful to catch up with friends from all over Australia and to make new friends. Given the numbers, it was hard to locate people that you did want to chat to. There were numerous plenary sessions, and a choice between four talks at other times and even a … Continue reading
