Timelines – the interest and pleasure they can give

GSQ Blog Posted on June 29, 2015 by GSQ AdminJune 29, 2015

Just over a year ago, only a few months after I had joined the Genealogical Society of Queensland, I attended an Information Session on Timelines that was held at GSQ. At the time I was new to my family search and was deeply engrossed in obtaining birth, death and marriage certificates and was satisfied enough just to place each ancestor in the context of  where they had been born or died or who was married to whom and where they … Continue reading

Treasures in the Trove – June 2015

GSQ Blog Posted on June 22, 2015 by GSQ AdminJune 22, 2015

We were sitting in our newly renovated office pod, our surroundings bright and clean and the setting modern.  Explaining how interested I was becoming in researching my family history and supporting people who were discovering their own, my colleague looked at me with a benign smile.  “I can’t”, she said in a very determined way, referring to researching her own heritage.  “My father’s name was Smith!”  As any self respecting genealogist would, I responded quickly and decisively.  “It IS do-able.  … Continue reading

GSQ Blog Posted on June 15, 2015 by GSQ AdminJune 15, 2015

I have been trying to get back into some particular research for the last few weeks. I even have a pile of library books waiting for me, which I have renewed already. Twice! But there is something stopping me from opening the books, some kind of block. Maybe it’s time related. If I start reading, I’ll have to put it down too soon to do something else, like go to work, or drive a child to sport, or sleep. Maybe … Continue reading

What’s in a name

GSQ Blog Posted on June 8, 2015 by GSQ AdminJune 8, 2015

I was recently pondering the importance that we attach to names when there was, yet again, intense media scrutiny over the names chosen for the latest royal baby. She ended up being Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, an obvious nod to her great-grandmother the Queen, her grandmother Diana, and a feminine form of her grandfather’s name Charles. She joined her brother George Alexander Louis, the latter name probably recognising Lord Louis Mountbatten. I was wondering, however, whether these children would be like … Continue reading

Go Queensland!

GSQ Blog Posted on June 4, 2015 by Helen SmithJanuary 1, 2017

Queensland Day celebrations are part of Queensland Week, which focuses on the state’s history and development, the people of Queensland, and their achievements. 6 June is Queensland Day.  It commemorates the day Queen Victoria signed documents granting Queensland the right to its own representative government. Queensland was a self-governing colony from 1859 to 1900, and became one of Australia’s founding states on January 1, 1901 on Federation.  Queensland Day has officially been celebrated since 1981. In 2009 as part of … Continue reading
