Precious items evoke precious memories.

GSQ Blog Posted on May 30, 2021 by Bobbie EdesMay 30, 2021

Not all our heirlooms are photos, china, jewellery etc.  This is the story of one of my precious items, a piece of furniture lovingly crafted by my father for his future family home, just prior to my parents’ marriage in 1939. Some of the items Dad made included a sideboard, a china cabinet, a dining room suite, telephone table with attached seat (almost retro style), a lovely double bed suite with matching duchess[1] and stool. In many of the items … Continue reading

Grandmothers.

GSQ Blog Posted on May 23, 2021 by Lee EnglishMay 23, 2021

What a year! In February I celebrated my 70 birthday; in early April, Les and I attended the wedding of our youngest daughter Kate to Michael; and by the end of 2021, we will be grandparents to two children. Kate and Michael’s daughter in July and Rachel and her partner Emma’s child in November.  My excitement knows no bounds as my dreams will finally be realized when these two are born – I will be a grandmother. Celebrations of Space: the Irish History and Society series

GSQ Blog Posted on May 17, 2021 by guestbloggerMay 17, 2021

Occupations and recipes – family traditions

GSQ Blog Posted on May 10, 2021 by Pauline WilliamsMay 10, 2021

Following on from a successful February Writing Group meeting when we wrote short narratives inspired by a photo from our collection, in April we wrote about a family member who interested us in some way. As is often the case, the stories were wide ranging both in their content and style. Combining the outcome of this session with the research for my presentation for GSQ on occupations reminded me once again that it takes all sorts to create a family … Continue reading

Twitter for Family History – Let’s Look at #ANZAncestryTime.

GSQ Blog Posted on May 3, 2021 by Shauna HicksMay 3, 2021

First a confession – I have been on Twitter since 2009 so yes I am a fan. Why? There are numerous reasons. By following key genealogists, I can get the latest news on Australian, English, Scottish or Irish research, DNA updates or even what is happening at local record offices and archives. I can chat to geneamates, or find out about upcoming webinars or what books to put on my reading list. Time spent varies depending on what else is … Continue reading
