My Sad and Glad Tales of PRONI.

GSQ Blog Posted on December 12, 2022 by Bobbie EdesDecember 12, 2022

I’ve been pondering on what to write about in my next blog for a few days now having finished a series of stories about my Irvine family from Killyleagh in Co Down. Having mentioned this to our GSQ Patron, she suggested I write about researching at the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) in Belfast, so that’s what this missive is about. I have now realised that my blog is due for publishing on 12 December 2022. This date marks … Continue reading

The wretched peasantry in Ireland: The 1822 famine disaster

GSQ Blog Posted on October 24, 2022 by guestbloggerOctober 21, 2022

By Jennifer Harrison. ‘The poor Inhabitants of Clare is actily starving, living on one meal in the day and that same a bad meal, we are in hopes ye will doe something for us out of hand, we will actily Die with hunger if ye don’t luck to us out of hand as them that has a little family must Rob before They die with hunger before their face, As they are half dead before.’  This powerfully pathetic plea reported … Continue reading

The Irish Potato.

GSQ Blog Posted on September 19, 2022 by guestbloggerSeptember 9, 2022

By Meg Carney. Whenever Irish food is mentioned, I immediately think of the potato. I think of poverty, famine, hunger, and reliance on one food – the potato. I then think of my own family history which is intrinsically linked to the potato because a significant number of my ancestors came to Australia during the Famine of 1846 – 1851 or in the aftermath of that famine in the 1850s and 1860s. That famine is referred to as The Great … Continue reading

A Carpenter in Law

GSQ Blog Posted on August 1, 2022 by Bobbie EdesAugust 1, 2022

The last of my Killyleagh siblings in this series of blogs is my great-grandfather, Robert Gilmour Irvine. I’ve written about the other ten siblings including the birth of Robert’s twin brother Andrew in 1849 in a previous GSQ Blog.[1] It appears that Robert was a devout Christian and in April 1867, when 18 yrs old he was confirmed along with his elder brother, James. With planning well underway for his emigration to join his brothers in Queensland, before he left … Continue reading

Hugh Irvine: bootmaker and storekeeper extraordinaire.

GSQ Blog Posted on June 20, 2022 by Bobbie EdesMay 30, 2022

Many moons ago I tentatively knocked on the door of Ian Irvine, a second cousin of my dad’s. The door opened with a welcome and I fought back a lump in my throat, as gentle speaking Ian reminded me so much of my deceased father. Ian was my introduction to many in this family and I dedicate this story to now deceased Ian, Lex and Amelia; grandchildren of Hugh Irvine. I am grateful I spent many hours with them in … Continue reading
