The Demise of a Gold Prospector.

GSQ Blog Posted on March 17, 2025 by Beverley MurrayFebruary 6, 2025

Do you have any family history links to ghost towns or lonely graves? Whenever I encounter a ghost town or a lone grave, my imagination kicks into over-drive. What are the stories behind these ghost towns? At some time in the past, these towns were bustling communities with shops, hotels, and people going about their daily lives perhaps stopping to have a yarn with one of their many local acquaintances. What about lone graves? If you ever travelled on the … Continue reading

Strong women.

GSQ Blog Posted on November 13, 2023 by Beverley MurrayNovember 2, 2024

A few months ago, I accompanied my family to watch the exciting soccer match between the Matildas and France and subsequently followed the final games of the Women’s World Cup. I discovered and read an article about the Danish player Nadia Nadim. What an extraordinary young woman!  However, it’s not my purpose here to explain her story, you can seek it out if you enjoy reading about strong women.  I will tell you that Nadia certainly grabbed at chances that … Continue reading

I can still visualise my Nana’s house in Broadmeadow, Newcastle; it was her domain. I spent a reasonable length of time in that home, sometimes visiting with my mother and at other times I would stay overnight at the request of my parents. Constructed in the early 1900’s, the cement-rendered home … Continue reading

The Extraordinary Life of Uncle Billy.

GSQ Blog Posted on May 1, 2023 by Beverley MurrayNovember 3, 2024

Anzac Day approached and I started to reflect on my military ancestors. Last year I presented Uncle Jack’s story of his service at Gallipoli. This year I want to honour another uncle, who served in the First World war.  His, was an extraordinary life and the more I learn about him, the more I respect and admire him. Allow me to introduce you to William Wright, MM, alias Harold Harvey and affectionately known to the family as Uncle Billy. I … Continue reading

Deviations: should they be avoided?

GSQ Blog Posted on March 6, 2023 by Beverley MurrayNovember 3, 2024

I am often guilty of deviating from my family history research! I start out on solving a problem and suddenly I’m devoting hours to researching something not directly related to my ancestors. Should I try to be better disciplined? Recently I was on the trail of my Lovell family and quickly found myself researching the life of John Lovell who was totally unrelated to my ancestors, although I didn’t realize it at first. I became increasingly enthralled with his story … Continue reading
