A Genealogist Explores St Kilda, Scotland.

GSQ Blog Posted on August 5, 2024 by Mia BennettNovember 5, 2024

I have been lucky to have just been one of the privileged few who have visited the island.  It is now owned by The National Trust for Scotland and, as well as a small number of visitors, there are researchers and military personnel working on the island.  Wandering around the deserted homes gave a feel for the desolation of the place but also the community that pulled together to survive. As is the want of a genealogist, I became … Continue reading

Untangling the Dixons: how the new GRO beta can help

GSQ Blog Posted on July 31, 2023 by Mia BennettNovember 5, 2024

By Mia Bennett. The DIXONs of Yate, Gloucestershire all descend from Charles Dixon and Jane Hale, my 5xgreat grandparents.  Charles appeared out of nowhere, married Jane and had five sons called Thomas, Charles, Henry, John and James.  That bit is straight forward but it then starts to get a little more complicated as we head down the generations. The key mystery relates to Joseph Dixon and how many were there.  There are two records for Joseph Dixons who are the … Continue reading

Advancing puzzles with the 1921 census.

GSQ Blog Posted on June 21, 2021 by Mia BennettNovember 5, 2024

One of the most eagerly anticipated record sets coming soon is the 1921 census of England and Wales.  Taken 100 years ago on 19 June 1921, it is due for release in early 2022 once the 100 year rule has run out.  Findmypast won the contract from The National Archives to digitise the 1921 census and have recently released an update with confirmation that they are still on target for an early 2022 release.  Read more about it on … Continue reading

Discovering the Treasures at the Society of Genealogists

GSQ Blog Posted on August 10, 2020 by Mia BennettNovember 5, 2024

The past few months have been an interesting time for genealogy.  New approaches and developing technology have changed the way we do things while we cannot meet up or visit archives.  As a trustee and volunteer for the Society of Genealogists (SoG), I have been involved in supporting some of these developments and have been pleased with how adaptable organisations have become. One of our big advances is the start of Online Talks.  Opening up the learning opportunities (that are … Continue reading
