Greetings from South of the Border…
…down Sydney way. You may ask “Who is this strange woman writing on our blog today?” My name is Jill Ball and, like many of your members, I am an amateur genealogist who has a bad dose of the genealogy bug. You can find out a little about me from this recent interview.
I was delighted when your President, whom I have met at conferences and on geneacruises, emailed asking me to write a guest post for your fifth Monday post which does not have a regular blogger. I am honoured to be your first foreign correspondent. Selecting a topic has been difficult as there are many things I am passionate about, one being the use of social media for genealogy. I congratulate GSQ on making the leap into the blogisphere earlier this year. It has made it so easy for strangers like me to learn about your society, its members and activities.
As much as I love the internet and all it has to offer I believe that there is nothing better than getting out and about and meeting one’s peers. For this reason I accepted an invitation from AFFHO to be a guest blogger for The 14th Australasian Congress on Genealogy and Heraldry, Generations meeting across time, to be held next March in Canberra. I am using this opportunity to remind you of the event.
Wild horses wouldn’t keep me away from this conference which will give attendees an opportunity to hear eminent international and Australian speakers, access the cornucopia of resources available at repositories in our Nation’s Capital and to meet up and chat with fellow genies from all over Australia and New Zealand. One cannot overestimate the value of the informal opportunities one has to network with peers at such events. It is through such events that I have come to know Marg and Geoff Doherty.
