Local, Family and Social History – In Time and Place
You may be wondering why there’s another post from me in August. Well, this is a fifth Monday and usually we have a guest blogger. The need to confirm a guest blogger for August fell off my “To Do” list in the catching-up phase after a month overseas. So, I decided to tell you about a conference being held here in Brisbane on 3-4 October which is Queensland’s first local, family, and social history conference.
In Time and Place, is being held at Riverglenn at Indooroopilly in Brisbane’s west and is a joint venture for History Queensland, Genealogical Society of Queensland, and Queensland Family History Society. As well as national and international keynote speakers, there are 18 other presentations, trade shows and society stalls. The conference also offers the usual opportunities for networking and socialising.
International keynote speaker is Dave Obee from Canada; Australian keynote speakers are Shauna Hicks and Janis Wilton. The program is divided into two streams: Family History and Local History. There is more than enough for those interested in both these areas.
This conference is an excellent example of the collaborative activities of the three premier historical/genealogical organisations in Queensland. The theme underpins the nexus between family history and local history. It supports my earlier posts which emphasised the need to place our ancestors’ lives in context.
I do hope those of you who haven’t yet registered for this conference, and are able to make it to Brisbane on the weekend of 3-4 October, will consider supporting this inaugural conference linking local, family and social history. Full details are on the conference website at: itap.historyqueensland.org.au.
I look forward to seeing you there.
Until next time.
Pauline
