The Story of Martha Shaw. — 18 Comments

  1. Wow! I confess that my DNA knowledge deficit is enormous. (Perhaps this can be another challenge for this year). There is a document in which Martha Shaw is listed as being born in Bristol. How reliable is that, I’m not sure. I will be keen to know the DNA results.

    • The record from Newgate prison for Martha Shaw has her as born in Bristol. To rationalise this, this is a mishearing for Birstall in Yorkshire. Especially if Martha had a broad Yorkshire accent.

  2. Thankyou for your comments. There’s always more research opportunities and more speculation. That’s the intrigue of family history research! How we would love to know Martha’s fate!

  3. I came across a record of a Martha Shaw being convicted of using threatening language in September 1866 in Tamworth NSW and convicted to 6 months in default of bail. I was wondering if this is our Martha (my 3xG Grandmother), as her daughters Hannah (Julian/Julia) and Elizabeth (Betsy) lived near Tamworth and were both buried in Tamworth.

    • Martha Wells is my 4 times great grandmother. Her daughter Elizabeth Taverner is my 3 times great grandmother, she married Mathew Taverner. All buried in Tamworth. My grandfather Frank Taverner was born in Tamworth would love to know more on what happened to Martha . I know Thomas died in Warialda and possibly he and Martha had up to 100 grandchildren. I live in the Hunter Valley not far from where they lived in Wollombi.

      • Hi Paul,
I previously have posted regarding Martha Shaw, my 3rd great grandmother on my full maternal side.
        Have you done your dna?
Please email in regards to researching Martha Shaw.

    • Hi Mari-Anne,
That’s interesting isn’t it? Can you let me know where you found this record please? Hannah lived at Bowling Alley Point, a gold mining area just north of Nundle. Are you a member of the Martha Shaw facebook group? If not, perhaps you should join.

  4. Thankyou for your interest and comment. This is news to me and so intriguing. Can you tell me the source of this information please? It could be our Martha. Of course Shaw was her maiden name but that doesn’t rule her out. I have seen Hannah’s grave but not Elizabeth’s grave. I will be in touch via email. Bev

  5. Hi Paul, Amanda and Mari-Anne, thankyou for your interest in our Martha Shaw. May I refer you to the Martha Shaw Research group on Facebook? I am a member and many other descendants. I hope to connect with you there. kind regards. Bev

  6. Hi Bev,

I am a descendant of Martha Shaw > Elizabeth Wells. Thank you for the amazing research above, and attention to detail in referencing your sources. I have searched high and low for information about Martha.
Today, I found this information that I thought I would pass onto you, and all that are researching Martha Shaw.
I have read family stories online that Thomas Wells relocated to Liverpool Plains in 1840’s. Thomas’ daughter Hannah Wells came from Liverpool Plains to Scone to marry. Also on Mary’s birth record only Thomas is listed as the father. All these and the record below, now makes me wonder of they did in fact relocate and return to baptise Mary as Martha had passed and Thomas, Martha’s son was living in the area. I have no concrete evidence of any of this at this point.
This record, if it was Martha, one would assume that she would be recorded as Martha Wells.

Extract: ‘He further, stated that he was present at the murder of a poor woman of the name of Shaw, who was found cruelly murdered in her hut, on the Plains…’
The same record can be found in trove if you search Theremitchie
Also, to the above note about Martha Shaw at Tamworth in the 1860s. This Martha Shaw is the wife to Tamworth Police Constable Shaw. This Martha Shaw also is noted to be at Wollombi with court records. Search Trove with the key words: Constable Wells wife Martha Shaw. As there is a story about who she is.
Thank you for your wonderful research. I have enjoyed reading many of your stories.
    Jess

  7. How fascinating Jessica! I am very keen to explore this new lead. It appears to be consistent with some information that I have. Sincere thanks to you for sharing this and I would love to talk more with you. I shall contact you soon and forward to hearing from you.
    kind regards,
    Beverley

  8. It is extremely fascinating!
Since finding the newspaper article my wonderful mother has very quickly and quiet possibly saved me hours of research by finding the following newspaper article that points towards the above being Esther Shaw, not our Martha.
    https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/230669211?searchTerm=Esther%20shaw%20port%20macquarie
    Extract:ESTHER SHAW,
the wife of a Ticket-of-leave hired servant to
Messrs. Freeman and Gorahon, of Port Macquarie,
was barbarously murdered at Rolland’s Plains, by person or persons unknown
[1837 this article appeared in the paper]
If Martha did in fact leave her family and then in 1843 the article circulated that SHAW from the Plains had been killed, you could very much see how a family would run with that story.
This makes we swing back to Martha more than likely having a child with James Crawley.
And very much back to square one!
Looking forward to hearing from you.

  9. Yes, please thank your mother for her research findings. I was inclined to think that this could have been our Martha but obviously not. I agree with your conclusion about this other tragic event.
    kind regards,
    Beverley

  10. Hi Beverly, Iam a descendant of Convict Isaac Shaw ” Guilford”1827 > Known as the “Notorious Overseer” Cheif Constable NorfolK Island,he resigened after death threats by Prisoners, sent on a mission in Dec. 1840 as a Chief constable returning in mid 1843, with young wife and child Louisa, mothers’s name unknown? Louisa Child’s name Louisa Shaw Born 1842 However mysteriously ,Reg. NSW on 6 June 1842. by Rev Sweetman Methodist Mission Sydney
but Baptised in Oct in the BOI NZ Oct 1842 Anglican CMS, I have copy Bpt. Cert.- Daniel Shaw Convict Asia 1. 1824, absconded with 6 others ,found Dead in bush 1836. Father Of William Shaw Renamed Stephen Shaw his mother Aboriginal. Stephen is my Great G Father & Louisa Shaw my Great G.Grandmother. Stephen life History and our Family history Details have been deliberatley misleading up until now. Child Care protection have been over represented.
In regards to Martha Shaw I am curious to know if the Mary Ann Shaw Age 3 being placed in Child protecton 1830 was the child of Martha , it was common to remove children from the terrible conditions at the female Factories. Ther is so much history I have uncovered and have no issues in sharing if I can help Regards Graeme Beasley

  11. Thankyou Graeme,
What a fascinating family history you have discovered! To answer your question, Mary Ann was the daughter of Thomas Wells and Martha Shaw and she was baptised in 1840 and therefore it’s not possible that she was the same child that you mentioned.
    kind regards, Beverley.

  12. Thomas and Martha had a daughter who was also called Martha. This Martha married Phillip Wells (no relation) at Wollombi on the 1st of March 1852. Phillip was the son of John Wells and Catharine Wilson. John Wells came to Australia as a retired soldier and settled in the Wollobi area. The Thomas Wells who owned Springfield was Phillip and Martha’s son. He was born at Warialda.
