Thomas Muir and his Three Wives. — 6 Comments

  1. Marg, at least 2 generations separate Thomas and his third wife, which is quite considerable. At the same time, there were a lot of young Irish women arriving in Queensland, including one of my great grandmother’s and her sister. They had moved out to the Darling Downs to work as domestic servants and her eldest sister married a man who was 20 years older and an ex-convict, so maybe not as unusual as we would think today.

  2. I found this a very interesting read, Marg, not the least because my great grandfather, Peder Hansen, also had three wives. His first wife died in Denmark, leaving him with small children, as with your Thomas Muir. His second wife died on the voyage from Denmark to Brisbane. His third wife, my great grandmother, Hansine Nommesen, had also migrated to Brisbane from Denmark with a young child of her own. They married in the Anglican Church at Kangaroo Point.

  3. Hi Marg
Would one of Christina(Grant) and Thomas MUIR’s Children be Archibald who married Esther BLACK
I have just started to look into Archibald MUIR’s line and there is a possibility that Christina and Thomas are his Parents…. Unfortunately the marriage certificate of Archibald and Esther does not list his Parents.
Esther’s Orbituary states she lost her husband 59 years previous to her death and the only death that is close is in 1870 with Parents of Christina GRANT and Thomas MUIR.
I am MUIR by birth and at the moment I have several MUIR marriages connected to my Tree that I am researching to see if they connect to my direct line.

    • Hi Jan. They are the same family. I am descended from Christina and Thomas’ youngest child, Flora. I will contact you.
