My coalmining ancestor Joseph Stirland (1816-1879) — 1 Comment

  1. That’s an interesting and very well researched story, Pauline. What a hard life your ancestors lived ‘down below’ in the mines.
I was interested to see that Josephs’ grandfather was a framework knitter, as when in Leicester in 2015 one weekend I visited the Wigston Framework Knitters Museum. The various framework knitting machines in the workshop there demonstrated what a skilled occupation it was. The men generally maintained, repaired and in some cases made their own machines which operate so skillfully.
One of the machines gave us a demonstration of how noisy their enviroment was, so that also probably had a bearing on their hearing in later life.
