Convict Stories – Life after Transportation

GSQ Blog Posted on July 20, 2020 by Pauline WilliamsNovember 5, 2024

For many years Australians regarded convict ancestors with distaste and did their utmost to distance themselves from this part of their ancestry. However, many convicts had a huge impact on the development of Australia; the punishment that was meted out to them, not only in England, but also in Australia, was often incredibly harsh. From my recent research into the lives of three convicts, I think we could argue that these were not all the ‘bad apples’ the English justice … Continue reading

Newspaper and Directory Advertisements help to tell a story

GSQ Blog Posted on May 11, 2020 by Pauline WilliamsNovember 5, 2024

I have been using newspapers a lot recently. One of my current projects has prompted me to explore an extensive range of local and national newspapers in Australia and the UK. I’ve been searching primarily on Trove (trove.nla.gov.au) and on the British Newspaper Archive (http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/) and FindmyPast (www.findmypast.co.uk) to find relevant material. Else Churchill of the Society of Genealogists in London gave an interesting and timely talk on 19th century British newspapers, 18th century Journals, Local Directories and Poll Books … Continue reading

Learning by extending your research and attending conferences

GSQ Blog Posted on April 13, 2020 by Pauline WilliamsNovember 5, 2024

I have often commented that I don’t have any Australian family as I migrated from England in the 1970s. For a long time, I restricted my research endeavours to those countries where I had known ancestors – there was more than enough to keep me going. Along the way, however, I’ve discovered that I am not the only member of my extended family to have made that long journey from England to Australia. For instance, one of my paternal grandfather’s … Continue reading

Tracing your female ancestors.

GSQ Blog Posted on February 24, 2020 by Pauline WilliamsNovember 5, 2024

I have recently given talks at GSQ and Brisbane City Council libraries on “Finding Grandma – tracing the female line.” It can be a challenge to discover a female ancestor’s individual identity; in the 18th and 19th centuries women were generally recorded as “wife of …” or “daughter of …” in a wide range of records. Socially, this situation existed as recently as the Second World War. How many times when doing our research have we come across a baptism record, … Continue reading

Finding the Hook – keeping your readers interested

GSQ Blog Posted on August 26, 2019 by Pauline WilliamsNovember 8, 2024

Every piece of family history needs a hook to hang the story on and the focus of the August Writing Group meeting was to develop and share ways of ‘finding the hook’. Group members were invited to write an account of a moment in their family history that would likely hook readers and keep them interested. The writing style was open to members to choose whatever was appropriate for their story, be this historical non-fiction, creative non-fiction, or historical fiction. … Continue reading
