Joseph Guidice: An Enigma wrapped in several Mysteries. An electronic records investigation.

GSQ Blog Posted on June 24, 2024 by Geoff DohertyNovember 2, 2024

I came across Joe in the early 2010s while looking for photographs of Australian World War One soldiers for a presentation, I had found his photo on the State Library of New South Wales website.  He enlisted in the Australian Army in 1918, but as he was of Canadian nationality, I didn’t use his image for my talk. However, I didn’t forget him because the question intrigued me, what was a Canadian doing enlisting in the Australian Army? I eventually … Continue reading

The Next Genealogy Journey – Discovering an Adventurer.

GSQ Blog Posted on May 22, 2023 by Ross HansenNovember 5, 2024

For years I had been darting from one family member or ancestor to another belonging to my late wife, Helen, gathering the usual dates and places of birth, marriage and death. But that strategy had to change if I was to find how these people lived. Following the advice of seasoned genealogists at talks and conferences, often with their own website, blog or Facebook page, I needed to focus on one ancestor at a time. Who might be a likely … Continue reading

My ancestors who sailed the seas

GSQ Blog Posted on November 7, 2022 by Pauline WilliamsNovember 3, 2024

I recently developed a presentation called Ancestors who sailed the seas for the GSQ Wednesday morning Zoom help meeting. The aim of the presentation was to highlight a range of resources for finding information about sailors, the ships they served on, and the shipping companies that employed them. I used examples from my own family to illustrate what I found and where I found it. Who were the sailors in my family? Unsurprisingly to me, they were on my maternal … Continue reading

Out in the weather

GSQ Blog Posted on July 18, 2022 by Sharyn MerkleyNovember 5, 2024

Weather? What Weather? Many Australians are still recovering from the latest floods, bushfires, and storms. Our unforgiving climate has battered settlers since their arrival. For tens of thousands of years, indigenous Australians have wrapped their lives around the seasons. History is alive with weather related sliding door moments. As the Spanish Armada in 1588 fled north from the English attack, their only route back to Spain was to sail around the north of Scotland, keeping well out to sea. However, … Continue reading

From the Azores to Australia

GSQ Blog Posted on March 16, 2020 by Helen ConnorNovember 5, 2024

Do you know where the Azores are located? It is an archipelago composed of nine volcanic islands in the North Atlantic, which are an autonomous region of Portugal and located about 1,360 km west of that country. This is about my maternal great great grandfather Joseph Antoney and my paternal great grandfather, Emanuel Vero. What a coincidence, an ancestor from the Azores Islands on both sides of my family but two generations apart. Growing up on a remote group of … Continue reading
