Highs and Lows

GSQ Blog Posted on January 15, 2018 by Joan RiekJanuary 15, 2018

Highs and Lows Thought I would share with you, some of the highs and lows of my family history research. Years ago, after researching at the State Archives and the local Council, I was able to find the address of where my Great Grandparents, Christian and Anna Nebe lived when they first settled in Queensland. Having to go to Toowomba I decided to call in to find the place. Only when I got there, I realized I didn’t have my … Continue reading

Christmas 1863

GSQ Blog Posted on December 17, 2017 by Joan RiekDecember 18, 2017

I thought you may enjoy this fictional account of what might have happened to my Great Great Great Grandmother, Mary Ann Perrett and her children. It was Christmas Eve. The light was diminishing, and James and John Perrett were almost finished weeding the vegie patch at their cottage in Bundamba, They’d been at their labouring jobs all day, but they knew how important it was to tend their garden beds. What with their father James dying suddenly, and now the … Continue reading

Don’t give up!

GSQ Blog Posted on November 19, 2017 by Joan RiekNovember 21, 2017

Following on from my previous blogs on “Thinking outside the box”, and the “Value of letters”, their use became invaluable, when I had to write a story about my father, Edgar Raymond Perrett. My father was on the hospital ship, “Centaur”, when it was torpedoed off the coast of Caloundra on the 14th May 1943. I was 21 months old so I never knew anything about my father. In 1995, I was asked to write a story about my father … Continue reading

The value of a letter

GSQ Blog Posted on October 15, 2017 by Joan RiekOctober 15, 2017

Many years ago I was given a copy of a letter my great-great-grandmother had written to my great-grandmother in December,1886. Such a wealth of information was found in that letter. My great-great-grandmother Mary Ann Sawtell lived in Kangaloon, New South Wales, while my great-grandmother Elizabeth Perrett lived in Laidley, Queensland. In the letter Mary Ann talks about many of the residents living in and around Kangaloon. In fact forty two people are mentioned in the letter. Could we write a letter … Continue reading

The Tale of a Bridge

GSQ Blog Posted on September 17, 2017 by Joan RiekSeptember 17, 2017

Driving into Gympie along Brisbane Road, you cross over Pengelly’s Bridge. This bridge with its predecessors makes for a fascinating tale. When I was nine my family moved to a property of four acres, bordered on two sides by Deep Creek, and then fronted the main road which went over Pengelly’s bridge as it is now. However, on the north-eastern corner of the property bordered by Deep Creek were the remains of previous bridges. This was always a fascination for … Continue reading
