When Walter met Elizabeth

GSQ Blog Posted on March 7, 2022 by Pauline WilliamsFebruary 20, 2022

From time to time I have wondered how my ancestors met one another – this is an intriguing issue when they come from distant parts of the country and/or different backgrounds. To keep GSQ Writing Group members in writing mode during the summer break, I suggested they might like to consider how their grandparents met and write a short story on this topic. Several took up this suggestion and our grandparents’ romances (as we see it) were shared at our … Continue reading

Accentuate the positive – 2021 challenge

GSQ Blog Posted on January 24, 2022 by Pauline WilliamsJanuary 10, 2022

Jill Ball has set a January challenge on GeniAus for a yearly blog to Accentuate the Positive. My first thought when this challenge was shared with me was the lyrics of the song “Accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative, and don’t mess with Mr In-Between”. So 2021 is my first effort and it has provided an opportunity to review the positives in a year that has presented many challenges.  The challenge has 20 set points, and I was able to … Continue reading

An adventurous ancestor turns up in unexpected places

GSQ Blog Posted on November 8, 2021 by Pauline WilliamsNovember 8, 2021

Regular readers will have met the Priestley family in my September post. That post told the story of Robert Priestley and his wife Jenny/Jane Tattersall, from Lancashire. In a family of 12 children, their only daughter Hannah married my 2 x great uncle Josiah Hall, one of the sons of Joseph Hall and Hannah Radford, whom we have also met earlier. My September post also highlighted the relatively short life of their fifth son, Enos, who had migrated to Victoria … Continue reading

Finding family connections in unexpected places

GSQ Blog Posted on September 6, 2021 by Pauline WilliamsSeptember 6, 2021

As many regular readers may know, I migrated to Australia in the 1970s and was convinced that I was the only family member to have made that long journey, apart from my sister and her family who migrated to Australia in the same year. As my family history research has progressed, I’ve discovered a number of connections to this great country, on both my paternal and maternal lines. Some of these have arisen by chance when working on another project … Continue reading

Revisiting early research.

GSQ Blog Posted on July 12, 2021 by Pauline WilliamsJuly 12, 2021

It was not long after my father died in 1987 that I first started to research my family history. I have related the story on many occasions that when I looked at all the people who attended my dad’s funeral and wake I wondered where everyone whom I knew as a child had gone. I therefore decided to start with my paternal ancestry as my maiden name is not very common. I did an introductory course at GSQ, became a … Continue reading
