Expanding your knowledge

GSQ Blog Posted on December 11, 2017 by Pauline WilliamsNovember 8, 2024

Do you have favourite resources/internet sites that you go to for your research? Do you limit yourself to these or do you actively seek out new ones? Some ways in which I try to expand my knowledge are to offer, and attend, education courses and conferences; investigate websites highlighted or recommended in magazines or by other researchers; and write this regular blog. How do these help me to learn more? Presenting an education course or writing a blog post puts … Continue reading

What if we told the truth about how we work?

GSQ Blog Posted on November 6, 2017 by Guest BloggerNovember 8, 2024

By Bob McAllister. The way in which you justify your conclusions concerning a branch of your family tree has much in common with a formalmathematical proof. Each one depends upon assembling demonstrated (and defensible) facts and then proceeding from them via a path of inexorable logic to an inevitable conclusion. But they share far more than that. Both a genealogical argument and a mathematical proof are deliberately structured to obscure the false starts, blind alleys and mistaken identifications that make … Continue reading

Having a hubby who is also into genealogy means we tend to do quite a lot of research when we return to his place of birth in England. During this extended period I generally leave hubby with his hometown mates and fly to Northern Ireland for two or three … Continue reading

Evidence and citation: proving your research

GSQ Blog Posted on July 8, 2017 by Pauline WilliamsNovember 8, 2024

Attendees at GSQs mini-seminar on 1 July 2017 enjoyed two presentations on the broad topic of proving your research. Dr Jennifer Harrison, GSQs patron, took us through the Sherlock Holmes method of sleuthing. She used a wide range of quotes from Sherlock Holmes’ stories to illustrate her points: it’s essential to research in depth, document what you find, and analyse the results. She emphasised that it was vital “never to assume”, but to search for evidence. Keen observation can reveal … Continue reading

Short on time?

GSQ Blog Posted on January 25, 2016 by Guest BloggerNovember 8, 2024

By Tiggy Johnson.   I’m always wondering whether I can use a short period of time effectively for genealogy, so I was pretty happy to see this article come up during the week. You may have already seen it if you keep an eye on GSQ’s Facebook page.   Mostly, I’m keen to use time during my lunch break at work effectively so, as much as I like the idea of the writer’s first tip – scanning and labelling photographs … Continue reading
